RO gives you more of what you like, and none of what you don't. You customize the action in 2 ways:
- Player Preferences: lets you choose which gameplay features turn you on, and completely hide unwanted gameplay features, actions, dialogue, and sexual orientations from menus. The settings you choose automatically prevent computer players (NPCs) from using that content during a scene.
- Character Preferences: lets you choose the personality, preferences, and sexual and affectionate orientation for each character you create (which can override the Player Preferences if you allow it for particular characters). There is no limit to how many characters (aka "alts") you can create and play in the RO Community, each with their own unique preferences (great for playing different moods or kinks some of the time).

- Multiplayer networked play
Play Rapture Online with other singles and couples across the Internet or a local network. Online chat and fantasy-sharing features help even newb cybersexers to have hot online role-play adventures with sexy 3D avatars.
- Multiplayer hot-seat play
Couples and friends can play Rapture Online together at one computer.
Explore together (and play online with other couples and singles in a networked multiplayer game). Some mini-games have special features to spice up hot-seat play with activities to try "in the flesh." Think of it as a customizable, interactive version of adult board and card games (or virtual "swinging" if you share a networked multiplayer game with other couples and singles online).
- Solo play
How many MMOs let you have fun with your characters offline too? RO lets you play out sexy sim fantasies in one of two single-player modes:
- In free-style mode, you can change which character you are controlling at any time. NPC characters (ones you aren't actively controlling) will be smart enough to play along with many of your actions, and special fantasy NPC packages will be available as add-ons in the future to make your "living dolls" even more responsive.
- In adventure mode, you can play through an erotic story that BLI or another RO Player has created in the RO Story Editor. You can even create your own playable erotic stories in the Story Editor, save them, and live them again and again in adventure mode.

You can make completely unique characters to use in your solo and multiplayer scenes. Every character feature can be customized with a variety of options including:
- Detailed face and body customization (the best genital/breast creation tools on the market)
- Hair, skin, cosmetics, tattoos, and piercings
- Choice of voice packs
- Bio, favorites, and custom stats
- Character Personals Profile
- Career choice, skill stats, and job stats
- Blog, group affiliations, and more
- Ranks, awards, and community stats
- Dress Up Editor
You can wear a variety of clothing and accessory items, and save outfits to re-use easily. Dress up for different fantasies, moods, and jobs in RO.
- Setting Editor
You can customize the ready-to-play settings included with RO for your own specific fantasies. Set the right scene with your choice of furniture, wall and floor coverings, interactive props, and decorative items.
- Action Editor
You can record, edit, and save lists of actions to be played back from your shortcuts menu in-game, allowing impressive, personalized, and sexy in-game combos and flourishes.
- Movie Editor
You can cast and direct your own adult movie, then sit back and enjoy it, share it, or sell it to other RO Players. Record the action live with real-time performers in a multiplayer game or control all of the actors yourself in a solo play game. RO makes machinima production easy.
- Story Editor
You can read, write, and share traditional erotic stories (without pictures, or with RO screenshots in a comic strip format). You can also create playable stories, interactive erotic fiction using RO's special authoring tools. Then enjoy your playable story in solo adventure mode, share it, or sell it to other RO Players.
